Slippy Toad is an anthropomorphic green toad and a childhood friend of Fox McCloud, and has been flying alongside him for several years. He serves as the inventor and mechanic of the Star Fox team. The excitable amphibian member of the Star Fox Team, Slippy may seem like a hyper-doofus and his inferior piloting skill in an Arwing in comparison to the others leaves a lot to be desired (leading to himself need to be rescued frequently), but he has excellent mechanical knowledge, as he specialized in engineering at the Cornerian Academy and learned a lot from his father, Beltino Toad, the Director of Engineering at Space Dynamics Co. Ltd. He has invented a wide variety of gadgets and vehicles, creating some of them alongside his father, and after joining the Star Fox team, he helps his wingmates with his creations, his intellect, and takes care of maintenance for their vehicles. Their combined inventions, from the Arwing, Landmaster and Blue-Marine to the Reflector and Blaster, have helped the Star Fox Team prevail over the enemy, specifically Andross, making Slippy a major contribution to the team's success. Slippy's main role on the battlefield is providing a Shield Gauge to determinate the health of a boss, but only if he is present to do so, as showcased in Star Fox 64 and few later games.
Slippy typically appears in all Star Fox games to date, as well as the comics and the Star Fox Zero promotional anime, as a supporting protagonist. He also appears as a background character in all Super Smash Bros. games, starting with Melee.
His Star Wolf team counterpart is Andrew Oikonny.
Biography
In his childhood, Slippy was schoolmates with Fox, Bill and possibly Falco. Being the son of Beltino Toad, the Director of Engineering of Space Dynamics, Slippy learned a great many things from his father and the two worked together for Cornerian R&D to invent and construct many inventions for the Cornerian Defense Force, and Star Fox Team.
While Slippy was also classmates with Fox at the Cornerian Defense Force Academy and training to be a fighter pilot, Fox learned that his father, James McCloud, had been betrayed by Pigma Dengar, and presumably murdered by Andross. Fox then convinced Slippy to join up with him, Falco, and Peppy to form a new Star Fox Team, as the team inventor and mechanic.
Trivia
- In the original Star Fox, Slippy had a unique speech impediment - he croaks in the Japanese version and stutters in the English translation. This was also true in the Nintendo Power comics adaptation and the game's planned but cancelled sequel, but the quirk was removed in later appearances.
- Slippy is also the only character (apart from Fox) to respond directly to Peppy in Star Fox 64.
Slippy giving a thumbs up in Starlink: Battle for Atlas
- In spite of his lesser combat skills in comparison to his friends, as Slippy is technically the inventor/mechanic of the majority of the primary equipment the Star Fox Team uses throughout the games, some fans consider him arguably its most important member.
- Although Slippy is canonically male, due to himself being voiced by the actress Lyssa Browne in Star Fox 64 (who also voices Katt Monroe and the Spyborg boss) which remain similarly youthful with male actors in later games, and sometimes his handsome appearance, he is mistaken by some as a female.
- On the Shadow Moses Island stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, if the conversation is interrupted by the opposing player, Slippy will react to Snake getting KO'd in the same manner as Snake's allies do in the Metal Gear series when the latter dies.
- Humorously, although Slippy Toad is by far the least skilled Arwing pilot story-wise, in terms of gameplay, he can become an equal to Fox or even Falco at the hands of an experienced player in installments where he is playable, specifically Star Fox 2, Star Fox 64 (multiplayer only), and Star Fox Command. This also applies to Starlink: Battle for the Atlas.
- Slippy shares a similarity with Keroppi from the Hello Kitty franchise in that both characters are popular green frogs known to be clumsy.
